Topic: Personalised Medicine in Baden-Württemberg – more than just molecules

With an ageing world population, new answers to complex diseases such as cancer, dementia, cardiovascular diseases and others are urgently needed. High hopes are pinned on ’personalised medicine’, which describes a paradigm shift in medicine, leading to improved therapy of disease by tailoring it to each patient’s specific needs, and thereby to fewer side-effects and better cost-efficiency.
Whether it comes to testing personalised drugs – Germany ranks second after the U.S. in the number of clinical trial sites – or to the presence of research centres of internationally renowned pharmaceutical companies, Germany is one of the top locations for personalised medicine world-wide. Moreover, Germany’s Federal Government has highlighted personalised medicine as one of the research funding priorities in its High Tech Strategy 2020.

Within Germany, Baden-Württemberg ranks the highest for third-party funding and industrial research in personalised medicine. The German Southwest is also the country’s most important location for medical engineering and the pharmaceutical industry. The government of Baden-Württemberg supports its own research strategy through financing relevant scientific projects and structural measures, including the establishment of a project group on personalised medicine. The great effectiveness of the health care industry in the German Southwest is based on two factors: The federal state‘s strong nucleus of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and numerous large corporations that have their offices or factories here. Thus, Baden-Württemberg possesses the optimal conditions to acquire a leading position in the field of personalised medicine.

The press trip will cover the different facets of personalised medicine ranging from diagnostics via interpretation of data and drug development to ethical aspects: It will portray Baden-Württemberg’s strengths in personalised medicine by visiting both research facilities as well as leading enterprises in the field and offer various opportunities to interview the different players involved (see enclosed program).

Our state wants to publicise our spearheading of these new developments and invites selected European journalists on an exclusive press trip through Baden-Württemberg from June 26 to June 29, 2018. The program ends with the closing event of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting – a one day boat trip on Lake Constance to island Mainau – together with Nobel laureates and the most promising young scientists from all over the world. The program will be held in English. The costs for the flight to and from Baden-Württemberg, board, lodging and logistics in Baden-Württemberg are covered by Baden-Württemberg International (see contents and terms of participation).

‘We would be very pleased if you were to consider this invitation to discover “Personalised medicine made in Baden-Württemberg”. We are looking forward to meeting you and to receiving your application for the press trip latest by April 26, 2018.
