Brexit - Opportunities and Challenges for Baden-Württemberg

bw-i offers the opportunity to discuss the topic Brexit at various events.

Present Status:
On 23 June 2016, within the context of a referendum,  the citizens of the United Kingdom voted by a majority (51.9%) to leave the European Union. Negotiations have been in progress since the withdrawal clause Art. 50 was activated. Details of the withdrawal and the terms applicable to future relations among the countries have not yet been determined. The only thing that is clear is that the UK will leave the European Union on 29 March 2019. A transitional period was determined until the end of 2020, during which details of the future cooperation will be negotiated while the current terms of trade continue to apply.

Consequences:
The withdrawal of the second largest economy from the European Union will have a profound effect on the economy of both the United Kingdom and the remaining 27 EU countries, the reason being that the freedoms in the movement of persons, services, goods and capital obtained in 1993 are open to debate.

Baden-Württemberg will also feel the effects. The UK is the 6th most important trade partner for Baden-Württemberg. There is considerable demand in Great Britain for products originating from Baden-Württemberg, with machinery, pharmaceutical products, motor vehicles and the relevant spare parts having the largest financial export share.

To do:
At the present time it is not yet possible to predict the outcome of the negotiations, yet it is important to remain informed and well-connected in order to discuss different scenarios and new value chains.

Baden-Württemberg International organizes events together with its partners, offering regional enterprises and research institutions an opportunity to exchange their views with players from industry, science, academia and politics. Events:

- Global Connect
