Between Big Data and data security: Solutions from the Southwest at CeBIT

Getting to know companies, initiating business and entering into cooperations at the joint Baden-Württemberg presence at the leading IT fair

“Datability”, the responsible use of vast amounts of data, is in the spotlight at CeBIT from 10 to 14 March 2014. 17 companies and institutions from the Southwest will be presenting administration applications and solutions for the digital economy at the Baden-Württemberg stand C58 in Hall 7. Secretary of State, Ingo Rust, will be discussing current trends with the exhibitors on 13 March. The joint stand is being organised by the state companies, MFG Innovation Agency for ICT and Media and Baden-Württemberg International (bw-i).

Stuttgart / Hannover, 26/02/2014 – According to a study conducted by the BITKOM association, Big Data means nothing to one in two Germans, and yet it concerns the security of the personal data of each and every one of us. This tension between data use and data security is appropriately the principal focus of CeBIT 2014. Companies from the Southwest will be presenting innovative products and technologies that address this issue at the Baden-Württemberg joint stand C58 in Hall 7.

The analysis of vast amounts of data has enormous potential for commerce, public administration, and other areas of society. It allows, for example, easier personalisation of medicine use and more efficient traffic control. Big Data can also make a substantial contribution to the successful implementation of changes in energy consumption and generation. However, data theft, attacks from hackers and, last but not least, recent revelations about secret service activities have alarmed everyone and impressed upon them the dangers of data collection on a grand scale.

Under the heading “Datability”, CeBIT is putting the spotlight on the responsible use of vast amounts of data. The term is an amalgam of Big Data and responsibility/sustainability. “Datability” is not only a matter of attitude but also requires technological solutions and applications in the ICT sector.

Baden-Württemberg’s presence in the Public Sector Park

Exhibitors from the Southwest have a broad range of services and products to offer, from data management to IT security through to knowledge platforms. The focus is on digital solutions in administration, hence the location of the joint stand in Hall 7 in the Public Sector Park.

“Anyone who is interested in meeting experts in sustainable data management is most welcome to the Baden-Württemberg stand”, emphasises Prof. Carl Bergengruen, CEO at MFG Baden-Württemberg. “The Southwest is home to many pioneering software solutions in this area”, he adds.

Baden-Württemberg International (bw-i) offers a special service for businesses and investors at the joint stand. “IT companies from Germany and abroad looking for a collaborative partner can get in touch here through bw-i”, points out Jürgen Oswald, CEO at bw-i. “Companies interested in establishing themselves in Baden-Württemberg can also receive advice from our staff about suitable locations”.

The responsibility attached to vast amounts of data

The 17 exhibitors include both commercial enterprises and public institutions from the Southwest. Some of them will be showing at the stand for the very first time, others have shown at the stand before, such as CIT or COMback. Among the businesses making their debut are two that are concerned with the responsibility attached to the collection of vast amounts of data: Blue Elephant, based in Stuttgart, specialises in IT operations management and JobRouter, based in Mannheim, optimises business processes and workflow management. Another newcomer is the Fraunhofer spin-off, Vitero, winner of the IT innovation award 2013.

The Baden-Württemberg joint stand at CeBIT has been a fixed feature for the past 15 years. The state government will also play its part at the trade fair. Ingo Rust, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Finance and Economics, will be visiting the stand on Thursday, 13 March 2014, after a tour of the trade fair. He will be discussing current trends and developments in information and communication technology with the exhibiting companies and institutions.
