Baden-Württemberg at Intersolar Europe 2012, the world's largest sector-specific platform for the international solar industry

Accompanied by innovative Baden-Württemberg companies and institutions, Baden-Württemberg International will be presenting Baden-Württemberg as a location for industry and science at Intersolar Europe, the world's leading trade fair for photovoltaics, solar energy and solar building, in Munich from 13 to 15 June 2012.

This year, Baden-Württemberg International will be represented with a joint stand at Intersolar Europe in Munich for the eighth time. Along with innovative Baden-Württemberg universities and companies such as SPHINX Computer Vertriebs GmbH, Energieberatung Benjamin Kienzler Ltd., Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG, Solar Energie Zentrum, der AXON Kabel GmbH, KaMo Frischwarmwassersysteme GmbH, Institut INES of the Hochschule Offenburg, Industriebedarf Castan GmbH, Creative Energy Systems GmbH, bSolar GmbH, Taconova Gmbh and PSE AG, the agency for economic promotion will be operating a joint Baden-Württemberg stand (No. B2.530) in hall B2 to showcase the industrial and innovative strength of the German southwest in the area of solar technology. With more than 2,000 expected exhibitors and 80,000 expected visitors, Intersolar Europe is the most important get-together for the industry in Europe.

In the solar energy sector, one of the world's fastest growing industries of the future, Germany has been playing an important role for many years and is one of the foremost promoters of the technology. Baden-Württemberg, the federal state in the German southwest, occupies a leading position in this context: the pioneers of the solar industry as well as globally leading solar companies come from Baden-Württemberg. The photovoltaics sector alone, which is expected to achieve sales of around 5.5 billion euros in 2012, shows how broadly positioned the companies in Baden-Württemberg are: the entire photovoltaics value added chain, from manufacturers, suppliers and wholesale traders to project planners and installers, can be found in the state. At more than 50 per cent, the export ratio is exceedingly high and a further increase in activities abroad is expected in the years to come – even though part of production is, of course, destined for the local market in the sun-blessed southwest of Germany.

As a photovoltaic research location, Baden-Württemberg is also in the lead in Germany. Institutions of research and development have made a name for themselves worldwide in the area of solar energy and technology. The Fraunhofer ISE institute for solar energy systems in Freiburg, for example, is the largest solar research institution in Europe. In addition, the ZSW centre for solar energy and hydrogen research in Widderstall has one of the largest open-air solar testing fields on the continent. The International Solar Energy Research Center (ISC) and the Fraunhofer IWM institute for material mechanics, also have their home in Baden-Württemberg. These research institutions and the universities that are offering more and more courses of study in renewable energy and, especially, photovoltaics, ensure that a pool of qualified new staff is and will continue to be available. In this way, the state is securing a supply of highly qualified personnel over the long term as well.

Many extremely active networks and expert organisations with players from different areas of the renewable energy segment stimulate innovations, bundle synergies and create new market potential for resident companies. This type of cluster network is actively promoted in Baden-Württemberg in order to intensify the dialogue between industry and science. Some known examples are the SolarRegion Freiburg, the Energieforum Karlsruhe and the Kinet centre of competence and innovation for sustainable energy technology Esslingen e.V.

Jürgen Oswald, CEO of bw-i, invites visitors to the Intersolar Europe 2012 trade fair to come and find out about the southwest of Germany. "Baden-Württemberg has excellent research facilities, innovative companies and outstanding qualified staff in the area of solar technology. At Intersolar 2012, the experts of Baden-Württemberg International will be available to provide advice to companies from Germany and abroad regarding opportunities for investment and cooperation and will be showing that companies from the solar industry will find optimum conditions in our federal state."

The joint Baden-Württemberg stand will also serve as a point of contact for students and job applicants in technical professions who want to find out more about the opportunities for employment in the solar technology sector or other technical areas in Baden-Württemberg.
