Baden-Württemberg presents its strong aerospace supplier industry at the ILA 2010 trade fair

Stuttgart/Berlin– This year, Baden-Württemberg International and the Forum Luft- Raumfahrt Baden-Württemberg e.V. will be appearing together for the first time on a joint stand at the ILA trade fair in Berlin. Together with FAN - Future Aerospace Network and innovative Baden-Württemberg companies such as AEG Gesellschaft für moderne Informationssysteme, ASG Luftfahrttechnik und Sensorik, Beutter Präzisions-Komponenten, Ch Schneider, fipart, Günter Apelt, Johann Maier, LEWICKI microelectronic, Verocel, Witzenmann, and finally Zollern, they will be demonstrating Baden-Württemberg's leading position in the aerospace supplier industry in the International Supplier Center (ISC) on stand 110 in hall 11.

Although it is only a comparatively small branch of industry, the German aerospace sector possesses enormous strategic importance. Many of the world's largest aerospace companies such as Airbus, Eurofighter, Eurocopter and EADS Astrium have facilities in Germany. Industrial expenditure on research and development accounts for 17 per cent of total turnover in the German aerospace industry. This is substantially higher than in other important sectors such as automotive manufacturing and is one of the reasons why aerospace is especially innovative.

In Baden-Württemberg, aerospace has a long tradition: the Zeppelin and the first aeroplane made of fibre-reinforced plastic originated here. Other outstanding names such as Maybach, Dornier, Klemm or Heinkel are also a reminder of pioneering developments in the past.

Although there are no Original Equipment Manufacturers in the German Southwest, a multi-facetted supplier industry has evolved with a dense spectrum of specialised companies in all relevant fields of engineering and technology such as materials development, micro-electronics, communication technology, measuring/testing systems as well as special manufacturing techniques. A well developed and closely interacting network of colleges, universities and research institutions supplies the industry with important ideas for innovation as well as with highly qualified specialists.

Just under one third of the approximately 160 companies that operate in Germany and that can be assigned to the aerospace sector due to their main focus of work are located in Baden-Württemberg. The companies employ over 13,000 people and, in 2007, achieved a turnover of 4 billion euros.

The following events on the joint Baden-Württemberg stand will provide an opportunity to network with representatives of the industry:

  • Thursday, 10 June: Presentation of Baden-Württemberg under the slogan "Meet the Minister", with Minister of Economics Ernst Pfister, followed by a reception.
  • Tuesday, 8 June: Business Brunch Andalusia.

The joint Baden-Württemberg stand will also serve as a contact point for students and job applicants in technical professions who wish to find out about the possibilities of employment in the aerospace industry or in other technical areas in the state of Baden-Württemberg.
