Many-sided Latin America: fairs, conferences and the mediation of cooperative partnerships

In the Latin-American countries, we are primarily focussing on Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Peru at the moment.

In recent years, numerous Latin-American countries have become aspiring regions of research. However, it is not just that they have increased their expenditure in this sector; the expenditure in the tertiary area of education in some countries such as Chile, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil is actually higher than in Germany (source: OECD).  Baden-Württemberg International therefore wants to expand existing arrangements of cooperation with the different countries of Latin America as well as initiate new ones.

At numerous university and college fairs in Latin America, bw-i promotes Baden-Württemberg as a location of interest for higher education and science. In recent years, special focus has been placed on Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Peru. For many years, bw-i has been regularly represented at the 'Salaõ de Estudante' students' fair, the annual science conference of SBPC (Sociedade Brasileira do Progreso da Ciencia) in Brazil, and the 'Expo Estudiante' students' fair in Chile and Peru. These international get-togethers serve as an outstanding platform for the promotion of programmes leading to a master's degree or doctorate and for presentation of the latest research results of a large number of potential partners.

In addition to all this, bw-i offers regular information-gathering trips to different Latin-American countries for scientists and representatives of universities and colleges. The aim is to establish contacts between higher-education institutes in Baden-Württemberg and universities and colleges in Latin America and thus facilitate further steps towards the initiation of cooperative projects. As a result, student exchange programmes can be agreed on as well as projects that promote the exchange of scientific ideas and knowledge. This can enable both parties to make use of the expertise of the two scientific communities in the most effective way possible.

In these countries, cooperation with educational institutes in the secondary area is also being intensified. Presentations and participation in fairs at international, European and German schools, as well as at schools where the German language is taught intensively, awaken interest in studying in Germany and, above all, in Baden-Württemberg.
