Baden-Württemberg presents itself at Achema 2012

In conjunction with innovative Baden-Württemberg companies, Baden-Württemberg International will be presenting Baden-Württemberg as a location for industry and science at Achema, the leading international trade fair for chemical systems, environment protection and biotechnology, in Frankfurt am Main from 18 to 22 June 2012.

This year, Baden-Württemberg International (bw-i) will be represented once again with a joint stand at the Achema exhibition in Frankfurt am Main. Together with Baden-Württemberg companies such as Gummiwarenfabrik Emil Simon GmbH & Co. KG, PROBST & CLASS GmbH & Co. KG, R+E Automationstechnik GmbH, MSE Filterpressen GmbH, WEHRLE Umwelt GmbH, Wilhelm Keller GmbH & Co. KG, ts-systemfilter GmbH, Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Schlösser GmbH & Co. KG, Horn GmbH, Siegfried Kempe GmbH and Romet GmbH, bw-i will be using the joint Baden-Württemberg stand (stand E72) in Hall 11.0 to demonstrate the location's leading position in the area of chemical systems and biotechnology. The last Achema fair in 2009 featured 3,767 exhibitors, around 50 per cent of which came from abroad, as well as 173,000 visitors from 93 different countries, thus underlying its importance as a leading international trade fair.

The international character of Achema is also appropriate to Baden-Württemberg's chemical industry. Considerably more than half of its turnover is achieved abroad. Altogether, 435 companies with 98,400 employees recorded annual sales amounting to around 32.7 billion euros in 2011. This makes the chemical industry a strong pillar of the Baden-Württemberg economy and means that the federal state in the southwest of Germany occupies a leading position compared to the rest of the country. The largest sectors are pharmaceuticals (37 per cent), paint, lacquer and building protection products (11 per cent) as well as body care and washing agents (10 per cent). The education and training provided by Baden-Württemberg's industry and scientific facilities are far above average, with more than 3,000 young people and students in around fifty professional trainee positions and courses of study.

Leading German companies in the pharmaceutical industry such as Ratiopharm and Boehringer Ingelheim have facilities in Baden-Württemberg, in addition to very large foreign corporations such as Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline, the two biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, not to mention Roche. As the largest German provider of pharmaceutical services and one of the fastest growing companies in Europe, pharmexx is also at home in the state. Thanks to the innumerable small and medium-sized companies, the numerous research institutions and the many young start-ups, an environment of innovation is being created which is especially characterised by its multi-facetted nature.

"Baden-Württemberg is one of the most important locations for the chemical and, in particular, the pharmaceutical industry in Germany, offering outstanding conditions thanks to its highly specialised research institutions, excellent medical and biotechnological faculties and, last but not least, its extensive bio regions. At Achema, the experts from Baden-Württemberg International will be providing advice to German and foreign companies about opportunities for investment and cooperation and will be showing that companies from these industries enjoy outstanding conditions in our federal state", said Jürgen Oswald, CEO of bw-i.

Moreover, the joint Baden-Württemberg stand will serve as a point of contact for students and job applicants in technical professions who want to find out more about the opportunities for employment in the environment technology sector or other technical areas in Baden-Württemberg.
