Baden-Württemberg presents itself at MEDICA 2011, the leading international trade fair for medical and health care technology in Duesseldorf

In conjunction with successful companies and well-known research institutes from Baden-Württemberg, bw-i will be participating in MEDICA from 16 to 19 November 2011 in order to present Baden-Wuerttemberg as a location for medical and health-care technology.

This year, Baden-Württemberg International (bw-i) will once again be operating a joint stand at Medica, the leading international trade fair for medical and health care technology. Together with innovative Baden-Wuerttemberg companies, bw-i will be showcasing the outstanding position occupied by the south-west of Germany in the area of medical technology. In addition, the University Medical Center Freiburg with WiSMA (a company owned by the university), ITV Denkendorf, BioRegio STERN and the location promotion agency Tuebingen-Reutlingen-Zollernalb will be represented on the Baden-Wuerttemberg stand. In 2010, MEDICA welcomed over 137,000 visitors, most of whom came from the health care industry. Around half of them travelled to the fair from abroad. Due to the high demand from exhibitors, the organiser is ex-pecting approximately 4,500 exhibitors from over 60 nations this year. They will be presenting the entire process chain and a complete range of medical products. The main focus this year will be on electromedicine/medical technology, laboratory and diagnostic systems and methods, physiotherapy/orthopaedic equipment, medical products (requisites and consumables), infor-mation and communications technology, medical furniture and room furnishings.
COMPAMED, the partner trade fair taking place at the same time, will be offering mainly com-ponent-suppliers and product developers in the area of medical technology the opportunity to present themselves in an international marketplace. Baden-Wuerttemberg International is sup-porting the Hochform cluster initiative to create a joint stand at this fair. In hall 8b/stand number J31, eight companies from the North Black Forest region will be presenting themselves on this stand.

Baden-Wuerttemberg is one of the top locations in Germany for medical technology and health care systems
22 per cent of the approximately 11,000 German companies involved in medical are located in the federal state in the south-west of Germany. These companies generate annual sales amounting to 4.2 billion euros, around 23 per cent of the total turnover in Germany and higher than in any other state. With a share of more than 19 per cent of all people employed in the medical technology sector in Germany, Baden-Wuerttemberg has the largest proportion of employees in this high-tech branch of industry. This position is additionally enhanced by more than 80 biotech companies, which enrich the medical technology industry.

Baden-Wuerttemberg – an outstanding location for research and innovation
The strengths of manufacturers of medical equipment in Baden-Wuerttemberg is their outstanding innovativeness. More than 50 per cent of sales are achieved with products that have been on the market for less than three years. This is made possible by the excellent research facilities at universities, especially in places where work and studies in medical technology are concentrated such as Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Freiburg. These ensure a supply of highly qualified employees and intensive research in the area of medical technology. Around 16 per cent of medical technology graduates in Germany obtain their degrees at Baden-Wuerttemberg's universities. A total of 80 institutes and centres are engaged in research and development in the area of medical technology.
Herbert Bossinger, member of the Management Board of Baden-Wuerttemberg International, invites visitors to Medica 2011 to find out more about the location: "In the area of medical tech-nology, Baden-Württemberg offers excellent research facilities, innovative companies and out-standing qualified staff. At Medica 2011, the experts of Baden-Württemberg International will be advising companies from Germany and abroad about opportunities for investment and coopera-tion and will be explaining why the conditions for companies from the medical technology industry wishing to set up business in Baden-Württemberg are ideal."
The joint Baden-Württemberg stand will also serve as a contact point for students and job appli-cants in technical professions who want to find out about employment opportunities in the medical technology industry or other technical areas in Baden-Württemberg.
