Brazil: Establishment of the German-Brazilian Technology Institute (DBTI)

bw-i supported establishment of the DBTI by procuring and providing teaching materials, train-the-trainer programmes as well as by means of experts who helped to set up the institute and carry out seminars over the short and long term.

The range of services also includes consultation for new companies in the Brazilian market, advertising for planned exports by German companies to Brazil, employee training courses, marketing support and translations. The centre for technology transfer enables the speedy exchange of information and technology know-how from Germany to South America for the development and improvement of products and technology – especially for small and medium-sized companies. The model factory with all modern manufacturing techniques serves as a demonstration laboratory. And the certification centre also carries out independent product tests and certifications.

Brazil: Establishment of the National Centre for Environmental Technology

The major objectives of the centre in Curitiba, Parana, include basic and further training of qualified environment specialists (with a focus on environmental management and technology transfer), provision of consulting services for the industrial sector, support in the introduction of environment-friendly technologies, preparation and equipping of technical laboratories as well as further training of specialists in Germany. The centre also offers training courses for industry and local government.

In addition to training, the centre offers the following services: applied research, environmental analyses for industry, process-integrated solutions for environmental problems as well as the provision of advice with regard to the introduction of evironment-friendly technologies and quality assurance.

One of the centre's main activities is wastewater treatment. It also publishes information on environmental issues and activities and actively engages in public relations work. In addition, the centre supports other SENAI technology centres throughout Brazil in matters relating to environmental questions. 30 propagators (teachers, technicians and consultants) have already been trained and improved their qualifications within the framework of the project.

Canada: Pilot project for training in the profession of "industrial merchant with international marketing" as part of an exchange programme

The focal point of this project was the development of a new profession for the export-oriented industry and the services sector – the industrial merchant. The project consisted of two parts: part one involved training in new technologies and key qualifications for professional groups in the metal and electrical industry. The aim was to promote the general exchange of experience and information with regard to the training systems in Baden-Württemberg and Ontario as well as with regard to the areas of metal and electrical technology with a focus on the acquisition of key qualitifications and training in new technologies. The second part of the project was a pilot initiative for training in the new profession of "industrial merchant with international marketing". The main objective was to develop business training with a focus on export and international marketing. The training programme was therefore supplemented with an exchange programme.

Chile: Establishment and operation of a centre for management consultation and technology transfer in Concepcion

In this project, the aim was the provision of advice to small and medium-sized companies in the VII region in Chile. bw-i provided support for technology transfer, public relations work and for technical workshops, among other things. As regards the direct provision of advice to small and medium-sized companies in the metal and woodworking industry, the primary aims were the application of suitable technologies and the management, administration and organisation of companies. Moreover, bw-i provided support for technology transfer from abroad, for the training of entrepreneurs and employees, for the preparation of joint ventures composed of Chilean and foreign companies, for the provision of technical equipment and for the training of local specialists in Chile and Germany. The goal was to enable the latter to continue the work of the consultation centre.

The primary objectives of this project were: advanced training for managers in modern methods of business management, updating of curriculums, the financing of workshops and seminars and the performance of diverse services for industry. The range of services performed by bw-i included advanced-training presentations by representatives of the Jiangsu Management Institute, the creation of information and training materials with a focus on business management, marketing, controlling, quality assurance, international cooperation, training courses in project management and the organisation of additional training facilities locally and in Germany. The project served as preparation for partnerships and joint ventures between Chinese and foreign companies.

Indonesia: Balai Latihan Instruktur Bandung (BLIB)

The aim of this project was to provide advanced training for technical instructors of other vocational training colleges in Indonesia, especially in metal-working technologies. To this end, bw-i organised advanced training courses for technical instructors in mechanical engineering, welding and sheet metal working. The instructors obtain a technical teacher's licence, with which they can teach at one of the 153 teaching facilities in Indonesia. In addition, representatives of trade and industry are given the opportunity locally to expand their technical and management know-how in e.g. advanced training courses for managers, workshop supervisors and foreman. Other services performed by bw-i included the exact description of equipment and teaching materials, the preparation of tender documents and export documents, the selection of bidders and interested parties, the shipping and installation of equipment, advanced training courses for instructors, optimisation of the teaching materials and support for experts who contribute over the short or the long term.

Kuwait: Performance of a feasability study on development and set-up of an advanced training institute

The aim of the consultations was to plan and set up a training facility for advanced training programmes oriented to the needs of the labour market. The programmes were for eleven professions within the three service industries: hospitality, fashion and body care. The services performed by bw-i included the analysis of exact labour market requirements and expectations in the three service industries, creation of the necessary job profiles, recommendations for training courses for the diverse professions, the development of an organisational structure for recruiting and training teachers and instructors, the creation of ground plans, CAD design of classroom layout including axonometric diagrams, equipment planning, technical equipment specifications, the creation of tender-invitation documents and the administration of invitations to submit tenders, the evaluation of tenders, the design and negotiation of contracts and the creation of an implementation plan and time schedule.

Portugal: Cooperation with the Centro region in the area of vocational training

The main goal of this project was to support the IEFP advanced training institute, including introduction of practice-oriented training at the basic and advanced level. bw-i was able to develop an adapted advanced training concept in order to improve the Portuguese training system and integrate local companies in the system more effectively. Moreover, bw-i financially supported the promotion of activities for practical training and for adequate qualification of employees to meet the requirements of the local labour market.

The centre offers advanced training courses in business management for active company managers, especially in the area of project management. For this purpose, bw-i created the necessary teaching materials. Advanced training of instructors from the region at a local facility enables the centre to pursue its primary objective. The transfer of know-how from Germany has contributed to the country's development. In addition, Vietnamese lecturers were trained in Germany. The centre also offers consulting services for Vietnamese companies, with a focus on business administration, technology and quality assurance.

The seminar on social market economy was organised and conducted by bw-i. The corresponding experts were also selected and dispatched by bw-i. The themes of the seminar included social insurance, labour market strategies, the economic order of the Federal Republic of Germany, the constitution, private economy in a social market economy as well as experience with and problems of the social market economy.

Russia and Ukraine: Advanced training programme for Russian/Ukrainian junior managers in Germany

Since 1997, the Federal Government has been supporting the basic and advanced training programme for Russian junior managers that was called into being by Boris Yeltsin, the Russian president at that time, and Helmut Kohl, the former German Chancellor. In 2000, a similar programme was started for Ukraine. bw-i was commissioned by InWent gGmbH to head one of the six consortiums that are running the advanced training programme for managers. Together with InWent, bw-i is responsible for preselecting the programme participants in Russia and Ukraine. bw-i arranges seminars, develops and coordinates advanced training programmes in Germany, organises internships in German companies and, as a follow-up measure, evaluates the programme. The participants from the two countries are or are about to become decision-makers in their respective companies. The programme thus offers the German companies that take on the participants a unique opportunity: they obtain information on the potential and possibilities of the Russian and Ukrainian markets, can engage in cooperative ventures with companies in these countries and can advertise for their companies by training a Russian or Ukrainian junior manager.

Together with its partners, bw-i organises internships for 60 to 70 Ukrainian and Russian junior managers from diverse branches of industry every year.

In this project, the aim was to conduct six two-week management courses for Russian managers in Baden-Württemberg. The themes dealt with in the seminar included market economy, marketing, project management, human resources management, costing, controlling and financing. In addition, business contacts and inspection tours of German companies were organised.

Bosnia: Management training in Zenica-Doboj for former refugees returning to Bosnia

The state of Baden-Württemberg initiated a programme to assist people returning to Bosnia and Herzegovina from Baden-Württemberg. For the former refugees, bw-i organised management and practical courses with a focus on the development of small and medium-sized companies as well as training courses in business start-ups and joint ventures. Within the framework of the programme, approximately 100 returning refugees who wanted to start their own businesses in Bosnia and Herzegovina received training. Moreover, 25 entrepreneurs from Zenic-Doboj in Bosnia were given business administration training.

China: Advanced training courses for officials of the regional government in Jiangsu

The project concerned advanced training courses on the WTO, market economics and export marketing for Chinese officials from Jiangsu in Baden-Württemberg. bw-i was responsible for preparing the required information and teaching materials, conducting the seminars and organising other advanced training facilities in Baden-Württemberg. The aim of the project was to provide advanced training for officials (mainly department heads) in diverse subject areas that would be of use for applications to the WTO, such as business administration, organisation, and technical and economic know-how. The project succeeded in enhancing the ability of national, regional and local authorities to work out and implement regional development strategies.

China: Advanced training courses for Chinese junior managers

With the financial support of the Ministry of Economics of the State of Baden-Württemberg, bw-i conducted advanced training courses for Chinese junior managers employed by companies engaged in joint ventures with Baden-Württemberg or working for Baden-Württemberg companies with branch offices in China. The courses included quality assurance (ISO 9000), marketing and personnel development and contributed towards an improvement in the relationships between the Liaoning and Jiangsu regions and the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Cuba: Collaboration between the Republic of Cuba and the State of Baden-Württemberg in the area of management training

bw-i was responsible for conducting more than 20 one-week management courses in Cuba and 2 four-week management seminars in Baden-Württemberg that were specially designed for Cuban managers from key branches of industry. The subjects included market economy, international marketing, international law, project management, human resource development, team leadership and conflict management, the organisation of exhibitions, costing and controlling, production and quality assurance as well as types of company and financing. Out of all the participants in Cuba, 20 were selected and invited to take part in further training in Germany, where they were able to visit several Germany companies and make business contacts. Between 1998 and 2003, more than 400 training days were held for over 200 participants.

Russia: Establishment of a consultation centre for business start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises in Saint Petersburg

In this project, four independent facilities offering consulting services and management training for small and medium-sized enterprises were merged to form a consulting centre for business start-ups and small and medium-sized companies. The consultants of the individual facilities were trained by German consultants. In addition, practical training courses for the Russian specialists were carried out in several Russian companies. Consulting services were also performed with the aim of expanding business relationships between Russian and foreign companies and promoting access to European markets. Russian consultants were given advanced training locally and in Germany.
